Sam Darnold was supposed to be done. A bust. A cautionary tale about the Jets ruining quarterbacks. Instead, he's headed to the Super Bowl after dismantling the Rams in the NFC Championship, and the betting market is making him the favorite to win Super Bowl MVP.

Nobody saw this coming. And that's what makes it so damn good.

The Quick Hit

  • NFC Championship: Seahawks 31, Rams 27
  • Darnold's line: 25/36, 346 yards, 3 TDs, 0 INTs
  • Super Bowl MVP odds: +130 (favorite)
  • His journey: Jets → Panthers → 49ers → Vikings → Seahawks

From third overall pick to career journeyman to Super Bowl quarterback. The NFL is the best reality show on television.

The Numbers Don't Lie

Darnold was surgical against the Rams. He carved up a defense that had given Seattle fits during the regular season, finding Jaxon Smith-Njigba for 153 yards and a score. The chemistry between those two has become the engine of Seattle's offense.

"It's a special moment for this whole team," Darnold said after the game. That's standard quarterback boilerplate, but with Darnold, it hits different. He's spent years being treated as expendable. Now he's the unquestioned leader of an NFC champion.

The Seahawks went 16-3 this season under second-year coach Mike Macdonald. Darnold threw for over 4,200 yards and 32 touchdowns in the regular season. The guy the Jets gave up on is playing the best football of his career at 28.

The Jets Connection

New York drafted Darnold third overall in 2018 and proceeded to destroy him. Bad offensive lines, worse coaching, a franchise that couldn't get out of its own way. After three seasons, they shipped him to Carolina for a sixth-round pick.

He bounced to San Francisco as a backup. Then Minnesota, where he had a nice contract year. Now Seattle, where everything finally clicked.

The Jets, meanwhile, are on their fourth quarterback since trading Darnold and haven't made the playoffs since 2010. Some things never change.

What It Means for Bettors

Darnold being the MVP favorite at +130 is interesting value. In a game where Seattle is favored by 4.5 points, the likely script is the Seahawks winning comfortably while Darnold puts up solid numbers.

But don't sleep on Drake Maye at +235. If the Patriots pull the upset, the story writes itself—second-year QB wins the Super Bowl with his childhood team. The MVP almost always comes from the winning side.

For prop bettors, Darnold's passing yardage and touchdown totals will be popular. His over/under will probably land around 260-270 yards. Given how he's performed in big games this postseason, the over feels right.

The Seahawks' Cast

Darnold didn't do this alone. Smith-Njigba has emerged as a legitimate number one receiver after a quiet rookie season. Kenneth Walker continues to grind out tough yards. DK Metcalf draws coverage and opens things up.

And that defense—Seattle's "Dark Side" unit led the league in points allowed. They shut down the 49ers 41-6 in the divisional round and held the Rams to 27 despite Matthew Stafford throwing for 353 yards.

The Bottom Line

The redemption arc is real. Darnold was written off, discarded, treated as damaged goods. Now he's got a chance to win a ring and the biggest individual award in football.

If you had told Jets fans in 2021 that Sam Darnold would be playing in the Super Bowl while New York continued its mediocrity, they wouldn't have believed you. But here we are.

Sometimes the best stories are the ones nobody expected. Two weeks until we find out how this one ends.
