NBA Friday: 76ers Host Cavs in Scoring Duel
Tyrese Maxey vs. Donovan Mitchell tonight in Philly. Two top-five scorers, one ESPN broadcast, and six other games for the degenerates who can't get enough.
By Sharp Money Mike
Friday night NBA features the league's third-leading scorer against the fourth-leading scorer in a game that should be entertaining as hell. Tyrese Maxey (30.5 PPG) and the 76ers host Donovan Mitchell (29.7 PPG) and the Cavaliers at 7 PM ET on ESPN.
The Quick Hit
- What happened: Seven-game NBA slate tonight with 76ers-Cavs the headliner
- The damage: Philly -2, total set at 234.5 points
- Why you should care: Two elite scorers in primetime, plus value scattered across the board
- The move: Model shows slight edge on 76ers ML at -120 with 57% win probability
76ers vs. Cavaliers: The Main Event
Philadelphia (22-17) is actually favored at home against Cleveland (23-19), which tells you something about how far the Cavaliers have fallen from their hot start. This team was historically bad against the spread earlier in the season, and while they've improved, the perception lingers.
The total at 234.5 seems light given the scoring ability on display. Maxey has been unconscious lately, and Mitchell is one of the most dynamic bucket-getters in the league. But both teams play defense when they want to, and this is a nationally televised game where effort should be high.
The model suggests a 2.5% edge on Philadelphia's moneyline at -120, giving the Sixers a 57% win probability. That's not a massive edge, but it's something.
Rockets at Timberwolves: 9:30 PM ESPN
The second half of the ESPN doubleheader sends Houston (23-15) to Minnesota (27-14). The Rockets are favored at +3.5 on the road, which feels like the books are adjusting for Minnesota's recent struggles.
Both DraftKings and FanDuel excluded this game from their main DFS slate, which is always interesting. The 222.5 total reflects two teams that grind defensively. Houston's seven-game home winning streak doesn't help them on the road, but they've been playing well enough to deserve respect as a road 'dog.
The Rest of the Slate
Nets vs. Bulls (7:30 PM): Brooklyn (-2) is trying to snap a five-game losing streak against a Bulls team that nobody knows what to do with. Nikola Vucevic (16.9 PPG, 9.2 RPG) anchors Chicago, while Matas Buzelis (14.8 PPG) continues his development. Total: 226.5.
Pacers vs. Pelicans (7:00 PM): The battle of the bottom feeders. Indiana (9-32) hosts New Orleans (10-33) as 2.5-point favorites. These are two teams actively trying to lose, so fade both if you value your sanity. Total: 237.5.
Clippers vs. Raptors (7:30 PM): LA (-2.5) has won four straight and visits a Toronto team that's been surprisingly frisky. The model actually projects Toronto as slight favorites at home despite the line. Total: 227.
Kings vs. Wizards (10:00 PM): Sacramento (-6.5) hosts Washington in a game between two teams you probably shouldn't be betting on. The Kings have won three straight, which in their world constitutes a hot streak. Total: 231.5.
First Basket Value
For the prop degenerates, Tyrese Maxey at +750 for first basket represents the strongest value play according to projection models. Kawhi Leonard, Julius Randle, and Pascal Siakam lead the raw probability charts, but Maxey's price makes him the mathematical play.
First basket props are essentially coin flips with juice, but if you're going to throw darts, at least throw them where the edge exists.
The Pistons Keep Rolling
Not playing tonight, but worth noting: Detroit is 28-10 and riding their best start since 2008. Cade Cunningham is playing MVP-caliber ball. The next time the Pistons play, pay attention—this team is for real.
The Bottom Line
Tonight's slate offers quantity over quality outside of the 76ers-Cavaliers matchup. That game features legitimate star power and should be worth watching even if you don't have action on it. The model's slight edge on Philly at home is worth considering, but this is the NBA—anything can happen when two teams this talented share the court.
