NBA Wednesday: Lakers-Cavs Headlines 9-Game Slate
LeBron returns to Cleveland as a 3.5-point underdog. Plus Bulls-Pacers, Grizzlies-Hornets, and the full betting breakdown for January 28.
By Sharp Money Mike
Wednesday night brings us a 9-game NBA slate, and the headline is obvious: the Los Angeles Lakers travel to Cleveland as 3.5-point underdogs. LeBron James returning to the city where he delivered a championship is always appointment viewing—especially when there's money on it.
The Quick Hit
- Featured game: Lakers at Cavaliers (-3.5), O/U 235.5
- Total games: 9 on the slate
- NBA trade deadline: 8 days away (Feb 5)
- Biggest favorite: Celtics (-8.5) vs Hawks
With the trade deadline approaching, every game feels a little different. Players know they could be moved. Teams are either buying or selling. That uncertainty creates opportunities.
Lakers at Cavaliers (-3.5)
The Cavs (28-20) host the Lakers (28-17) at 7 PM ET, and Cleveland is laying 3.5 at home. The over/under sits at 235.5.
Cleveland has the better record by a hair, but the Lakers have been on a solid run. LeBron always shows up against his former teams, and this rivalry still means something even in Year 22.
FanDuel projects the Cavaliers with a 68.31% win probability. The Lakers' moneyline sits at +114, which represents real value if you believe LeBron has one more monster Cleveland game in him.
The sharps haven't shown clear direction yet, but public money has leaned Cavs. When the public loves a home favorite this much, fading them becomes tempting.
Bulls at Pacers (-2.5)
Chicago (23-23) visits Indiana (11-36) in a game that should be uglier than the line suggests. The Pacers are brutal. They've won 11 games total. The Bulls are mediocre but competent.
Yet Chicago is only a 2.5-point favorite on the road. The over/under is 237.5—Vegas expects points.
The under might be the play here. Both teams are in that awkward zone where they're not quite tanking but not quite competing. Effort levels could be suspect.
Grizzlies vs Hornets
Charlotte (19-28) travels to Memphis (18-26) in a battle of disappointing teams. The Hornets are slight 1.5-point favorites on the road, which tells you everything about Memphis's season.
FanDuel actually projects Memphis at 55.84% to win despite being dogs. That's a mathematical disagreement worth noting.

Trade Deadline Watch
We're eight days from the February 5 deadline, and the rumors are flying. Giannis Antetokounmpo's name keeps surfacing even though Milwaukee says they're not trading him. Ja Morant might actually be available. Anthony Davis chatter never stops.
For betting purposes, pay attention to injury reports that might be load management disguised as "rest." Teams protecting assets before trades happen all the time.
The Thunder remain NBA title favorites at +100, but this trade deadline could shake up the entire futures market.
The Bottom Line
Lakers-Cavs is the marquee game, but the betting value might be elsewhere. The Grizzlies as home dogs against a bad Charlotte team feels like a gift. Bulls-Pacers under has merit.
However you slice it, nine games means plenty of action. Set your lineups, check the injury reports, and let's get after it.
